The Triton Museum in Santa Clara announces the opening of its new digital art gallery with pieces from the Eating Disorder Resource Center’s Be-You-tiful contest. The entries (poems, essays, video, and art) address how social media affects our youth. The exhibit will be at the Triton Museum starting May 18 through June 16.
You are invited to attend the opening on May 18 from 2 pm to 4:00 pm where Santa Clara City Mayor Lisa Gillmor and Santa Clara County Library District’s Jennifer Weeks will be presenting awards to the twelve winners from middle and high schools through Silicon Valley.
Bay area students were invited to submit pieces that explored how social media and the world around them influences self-perception.
About 50% of preadolescent girls and 30% of preadolescent boys report disliking their bodies, according to the National Eating Disorders Association, and the unattainable standards set by social media are directly tied to this rise in body-related struggles. The EDRC aims to promote self and body acceptance, increase media literacy, and empower youth to challenge harmful diet culture ideals head-on, all of which can play a pivotal role in preventing the onset of eating disorders among younger generations.
Thank you to our sponsors for this year’s contest, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and our partner, the Santa Clara County Library District.
First, second, and third-place winners will receive $300, $200, and $100 respectively. View 2024 winners and their entries on the Be-You-Tiful, Be Free Contest page.
Please stop by to see the winning entries between May 18th to June 16th. They will be on display in the Digital Art Gallery at the Triton Museum.
