The Eating Disorders Coalition (EDC) is seeking out stories from the eating disorder community in hopes of advocating for change on a policy level. These narratives will inform their advocacy efforts and may help shape the landscape of care for individuals affected by eating disorders. Currently, there are two different EDC surveys to fill out depending on the affected demographic:
Military Members, Veterans, and Their Families
Are you a member of a U.S. military branch or veteran and you or a family member has been affected by an eating disorder? If so, the survey found here will enable you to share your story. There is a special emphasis on those receiving help from TRICARE but this isn’t a requirement to participate.
Medicare and Non-Medicare Individuals Aged 65 or Older
The second EDC survey seeks out the stories and advocacy interest from individuals on Medicare, including persons aged 65 years of age and older and persons experiencing disabilities, and non-Medicare recipients who have had trouble securing insurance coverage for nutrition counseling (i.e. dietitian services) for their eating disorder. That survey can be found here.
Other Ways to Get Involved
Don’t qualify for one of the surveys or want to help the EDC further? You can!
By sending a note to your U.S. Representative about The Supporting Eating Disorders Recovery through Vital Expansion (SERVE) Act, you can increase access to eating disorder treatment for military members and their families. This piece of legislature aims to raise the level of covered care to that of substance use disorder, allowing military family members over the age of 20 to receive the higher level of care they need to combat their eating disorder(s). Click here to get started!
Building support for the SERVE Act is a great way to voice your concern over eating disorder care. We hope you’ll join us here at the EDRC and with our colleagues at EDC as we turn up the volume on recovery!
