Cathy Stonie, a longtime supporter of the EDRC, is premiering her play, “My Grandmother Told Me.” Her production is part of Playwrights Center of San Francisco (PCSF)’s summer PlayOffs Festival and highlights the prevalence of mental illness and specifically, eating disorders.
“My Grandmother Told Me” follows a young urban woman and her devotion to her late grandmother’s legacy that takes her on a path to her grandmother’s cabin in the woods outside of Bangor, Maine, to write a play. An innocent chat with a local delivery man exposes her self-destructive obsession to take on her grandmother’s soul.
The free show will be live through Zoom on Saturday, August 15th at 3pm (Pacific Time). The entire show, which includes a total of four plays from PCSF member playwrights, will run around 45 minutes. Viewers will vote for their two favorite plays and the play with the most votes will be featured in a full zoom production in October. The festival gives aspiring playwrights the chance to have their plays performed by local actors.
As much as the topic of eating disorders could be its own full-length play, Cathy included it as part of this short production to bring the disorder to light on a public stage. She hopes it will provoke a discussion around the stigmatization of this complex disease.
