The treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) is a growing crisis in the United States as a result of fewer academic medical center programs, which steers patients to private programs and limits treatment for the underserved and uninsured. Recovery requires prolonged hospitalization and rehabilitation, with relapse rates approaching 50%. Anorexia nervosa has a mortality percentage of approximately 6%, making it one of the most lethal psychiatric disorders. Walter H. Kaye, MD and Cynthia M. Bulik, PhD describe the crisis in the treatment of AN and propose solutions in their article titled Treatment of Patients With Anorexia Nervosa in the US—A Crisis in Care. This article covers information on the various ways the crisis of care has grown and potential ways to address the issue.
