The California court case of eating disorder patient Jamie F. v. UnitedHealthcare Ins. Co. concluded with a favorable decision for the plaintiff – an amazing victory for Jamie and her legal team represented by Kantor & Kantor. Jamie, a teenage college student, encountered a relapse of her eating disorder and her treatment team determined that a continuation of residential treatment care was the best course of action. However, Jamie’s health insurance provider, United Healthcare, denied her benefits as being “not medically necessary.”
Jamie worked hard to appeal the decisions made by United Healthcare but she was not successful. With the help of Kantor & Kantor, the Court case found that there was “no indication” that United Healthcare “considered those opinions [of her medical team] at all.” With the judgment made in Jamie’s favor, she and her family were quite pleased with the outcome. Kantor & Kantor Partner Elizabeth Green stated “The decision marks continued progress in holding insurance companies like United accountable to apply accepted medical standards to coverage decisions in the best interest of patients like Jamie.”
