EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: I have over 20 years experience working within the 12 step model of Overeaters Anonymous. Now I am using these principles in my practice to further help those still suffering.
I believe group support makes the difference in reducing isolation and shame of compulsive overeating. Working on childhood issues that are underneath the addiction is important part of recovery as well as incorporating cognitive behavioral approaches.
I do believe that full recovery from an eating disorder is possible. Recovery is one day at a time and dependent on effort and time spent on recovering. Food is a harder addiction to treat due to having to eat to live. Food slips are part of the process but shouldn’t be seen as failure. Many lifestyle changes are necessary to abstain and reverse the emotional and physical effects. This can take years and be a slow process but I’ve seen people recover imperfectly and have better lives.
