EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: I received my master’s from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon in 1980. Started running groups and doing individual sessions, relocated to Bay area in 1985. Worked as Inpatient Clinical Coordinator at Serenity Eating Disorders Program at Mt. Diablo Hospital in Concord. Opened private practice in 1990 and offered individual, family, group and couple therapy for this population. In 2006, I opened Casa Serena Intesnive Outpatient Program because there are no resources in the east county. I also teach at UC Berkeley and JFK university in continuing education programs addressing Eating Disorders. I frequently speak at conferences and community groups to help educate and inform about the dangers of Eating Disorders.

I believe there are 5 main aspects of the recovery process from Eating Disorders. 1) Stabilizing the health through good nutrition and stopping the behaviors–restricting, binging, purging and over eating. 2) addressing the emotional drivers of the behaviors, to find the feeling tone of the disorders and how it works in the client’s life. 3) to help the client address the belief systems and thought processes that distort their thinking and make positive changes and develop new coping skills. 4) Address the social and familial impact of the ED on their work, relationships and community. and Finally 5) to explore the spiritual aspects of the ED and the meaning it takes on in our lives and to find new and more positive ways of being fully alive.
Yes, I feel you can recover from an eating disorder. I define recovery as: Abstaining from the destructive behaviors and finding new coping skills that address the underlying issues related to the Disorder. Developing a strategy for dealing with life’s stressors that don’t include self harm in any form.
