EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: I have a BS degree in Nursing, and an MS. degree in clinical Psychology. I have also completed the JFK Eating Disorder Certificate Program. I have additional continuing education hours in the treatment of eating disorders, and also have both nursing and counseling experience in eating disorder treatment.
I use a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy(DBT), and psychodynamic therapy to treat eating disorders. CBT is used to “calm the symptoms”, normalize food intake and eliminate negative behaviors. DBT is used to learn emotional regulation skills, and psychodynamic therapy addresses self esteem, body image, impulse control, family of origin messages about food, and one’s own relationship with food. I use a multidisciplinary team approach and work with a medical doctor, nutritionist and psychiatrist as needed.
I think it is possible to recover from an eating disorder. Recovery is regaining balance in relationships, including one’s relationship with food. It is living without eating disorder symptoms, normalizing food intake, using exercise properly, identifying triggers for negative emotions and behaviors, and using healthy coping strategies. Recovery is a lifelong process. Lapses and relapse can occur in recovery. They indicate unbalance, and the goal is to return to balance quickly.
