EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERTISE: I have a special interest in adult internal medicine, adolescent medicine and eating disorders. I conducted research in adolescent medicine through the University of Chicago Dept of Pediatrics. I have 12 years of clinical experience working with adults and adolescents struggling with disordered eating and other complex medical and psychiatric issues. More recently, I have worked with an increased number of geriatric patients suffering from eating disorders.
I have an outpatient, multidisciplinary practice in which I work closely with a team of nutritionists, psychologists and psychiatrists. My philosophy is that we (the team and/or family) must work together to fight the DISEASE not the patient. I employ the Maudsley/Family Based Therapy Model (developed by University of Chicago and Stanford) whenever possible and appropriate. I have a warm and encouraging approach which I balance with firm guidance and expectations.
Yes I do believe it is possible to recover from an eating disorder and I define recovery as the ability to maintain a “healthy state”, not a specific weight but rather a healthy physical and emotional state of being. This includes normalization of vital signs, bodily functions (including mentruation in girls/women), lab values, energy levels, cognition and mood. Physical recovery must be coupled with the ability to maintain healthy coping skills under stress, healthy relationships, good interpersonal boundaries, and an ability to self-soothe without self-destructive behavior. I know recovery is possible!
