I know from my 35 year personal battle with an eating disorder that the quest to be thin can lead to immeasurable suffering for patients and families.
Eating Disorders can cause heart failure, liver or kidney failure, and other severe and life-threatening medical conditions. Anorexia has the lowest recovery rate and highest death rate of all the mental illnesses. And, despite all the research done, there’s still no known cause. Because of the prevalence of eating disorders in our country, most likely someone you know, a family member, friend, or colleague, is suffering in silence.
My ongoing treatment and advocacy on behalf of fellow patients has opened my eyes to the urgent need in our community for coordinated services and expanded awareness, education, and treatment. This gave me the impetus to focus my personal experience, passion, and skills on helping others and inspired me to found Eating Disorders Resource Center, the first locally-based nonprofit organization to focus on eating disorders in Silicon Valley.
There is hope. Recovery is possible. EDRC is here to help.
This website is dedicated to my
physicians, Dr. Katherine Halmi and Dr. Stewart Agras,
who for 35 years have been my inspiration.
